Encountering the past
This series of work was inspired by old photographs and images that were taken around Kad Luang market in Chiangmai. This busy marketplace by the Ping River is the oldest and largest marketplace in the northern part of Thailand. In celebration of the market, which is now a little more than one hundred years old, I wanted to bring the people in the old photographs who used to walk the market and are now long gone, back to life and walk the Kad Luang market of today so that they can see the changes, such as how the people of today dress, live, and spend their lives, as well as how transportations have changed (as with the rickshaw), or not changed (such as the scorpion-tailed boat that has been revived). At the same time, we can also look back and see how the people in the old photographs dressed in their time and how they handled themselves nearly a hundred years ago.
